Use the official service for decisions
This page reads the Environment Agency's real-time data API, which the Agency calls a trial service. It says the API has no guaranteed service level, should not be relied on for safety-critical decisions, and does not replace its own warning channels.

Flood warnings and alerts
Warnings and alerts in force for areas in the five councils, most serious first. The Environment Agency issues them at three levels, and marks a warning "no longer in force" when it ends:
- Severe flood warning
- Severe flooding, danger to life.
- Flood warning
- Flooding is expected, immediate action required.
- Flood alert
- Flooding is possible, be prepared.
No warning is not the same as no risk. You cannot get Environment Agency flood warnings for surface water flooding, sometimes called flash flooding. Source: GOV.UK
River levels
126 Environment Agency river gauges in the five council areas. Each level is compared with the gauge's typical range. The Agency defines the top of that range as a level the river has been above for 5% of its records, and the bottom as a level it has been above for 95%. Above the typical range is not the same as flooding.
| Gauge | Latest level | Typical range | Compared with typical |
|---|
Levels are metres on each gauge's own scale, so they can't be compared between gauges. Gauges send readings back at different times, often once or twice a day outside flood risk, so some readings are hours old: the time is shown with each one, and readings more than a day old are marked. "Highest recent" is the Agency's highest reading at that gauge in recent times, typically the last five years. Every gauge name links to its page on GOV.UK.
Rainfall
59 Environment Agency rain gauges in the five council areas. The API gives them no names, so each is named after the nearest river gauge town. The live list shows rain in the latest 15-minute reading; choose a gauge to add up its last 24 hours.
